This is the 3rd to Last 1957 A Coupe completed on January 3rd of 1958 by Porsche. Originally sold through Max Hoffman in New York. Purchased by a prior owner in the mid-1970’s, this 356 showed 85,611 on the odometer at the time. The new owner trailered the 356 Coupe back to his home in Danville, Virginia where it was parked in a corner of his workshop with the intention of restoring it one day. Other projects took priority and the vehicle sat in his shop until 2015. Now in old age, the owner knew he would not bring the 356A Coupe back to its former glory and sold the vehicle to Truban Motor Company. The vehicle still displayed a 1971 Pennsylvania State Inspection sticker on the windshield. The current engine and transmission have been with the car since at least the early 1970’s when it was parked and do not match the COA or Kardex, but are correct for the model and time period, meaning they were likely replaced early in its life. The metal panels of the car do match the vin stamp.
Upon purchasing the 356A Coupe, Truban Motor Company began a full ground up restoration of the car with the desire to make it the strongest and fully functional 356 that any Porsche driver would wish to experience or show at a club event. Our inspiration was to make this 356 a great driver with a few cosmetic changes that could have been done in 1957. Rather than make an outlaw we opted to keep the 70 HP 1600cc engine, transmission and drum brakes, but add real Speedster seats, a dual sport muffler and remove the over-rider bars. This Porsche has been converted to 12 Volts. The vehicle does come with a set of unrestored original seats and over-rider bars should someone wish to change them back. What was very exciting was that this 356 was also found with a rare Stirling Moss Les Leston steering wheel that was subsequently restored in California. Metalwork and Paint were completed by Auto Advocates of Yellow Spring, WV. The Engine, Transmission and Brake work were completed by Dave Coleman of Summit Point, WV. Assembly, testing and interior were completed by award winning MAAP – Madison Automotive Apprentice Program at James Madison University in Virginia under the leadership of Cole Scrogham.
This 1957 Porsche 356A Coupe is ready to drive, show and enjoy.
