Though I will hate seeing the Red Rocket go (my nickname for her), because I am deeply entrenched in graduate school, I just don't have the time to put this baby on the track as I had originally intended, and the track is exactly where she belongs! Speaking of the track, a cool story that the previous owner related to me regarded the Red Rocket's performance in relation to a 996 GT2 at the Virginia International Raceway. According to him, a GT2 driver, having tired of the much older, less-pedigreed 1986 944 Turbo's exceptional performance, angrily pulled over to let the Rocket cruise on by. Considering the Rocket's power/weight ratio, and, after having driven the Rocket extensively, I don't doubt his story! (Regarding power/weight ratio, the Rocket weighs approximately 2600 pounds and produces 340 RWHP.) As you can gather from the above list of maintenance/upgrades parts, the car is like new in many ways. In fact, many people who are not familiar with Porsches think the car is only a few years old! Given the fact that it is a 1986 model with 176,000 miles, that always brings a smile to my face. Also, the 176,000 miles did not scare me away when I was considering the car, thanks to all of the new and upgraded parts. At the time I bought it, the upgraded parts only had about 2500 miles on them, and I have only driven the car about 1500 miles myself. Now that I have had the lower end of the engine rebuilt and a new 911 Turbo heavy-duty clutch installed, I consider the number of miles to be a non-factor. The car was dynoed on 93 octane pump gas at 340 rear-wheel horsepower and 340 rear-wheel torque in the summer of 2004. This equates to 400/400 at the flywheel, the measurement that is generally listed in car magazines. With the computer management system, according to the Stage II manufacturer--Vitesse--the potential for the car on racing fuel (104 octane) is about 425 rear wheel horses, or 500 flywheel horses. With the electronic boost controller, you can also dial down the amount of boost that you want. This comes in handy while getting used to the car's abilities, as well as if you have to drive in the rain. One of the coolest things about the car is the amazing rush of the car when the turbo spools up and the boost kicks in. It is a real kick in the pants and great fun! It is also fun to roll the window down and hear the swoosh caused by the air being sucked into the cone filter. The car is definitely the most fun in my stable, by far the best-tuned and fastest, and, again, I will hate to see her go. I love the rush of its breakneck acceleration, its ability to stop on a dime, its amazing response time (it's as if the steering is telepathic), and its wonderful balance. And the sound of that engine... Man! However, back to reality, my advanced degrees are beckoning me. As far as performance numbers go, I know of a similar car that is making 330 HP at the rear wheels; the car is also about 250 pounds heavier than the Red Rocket. The car's owner likes to take it to the drag strip, something that is a bit rare among Porsche owners, as most Porsche owners, like me, crave road courses. He routinely achieves 4.1 seconds in the 0-60 sprint, and reports doing the quarter in 12.1 @ 131 mph. With the Red Rocket weighing 250 pounds less and generating slightly more power, I would imagine that the Rocket would have even better numbers. I can not confirm this, however, for I refuse to drop the clutch on any of my Porsches. In summary, if you have been contemplating building a track car and want great Porsche bang for your buck, this just might be the car for you. To be sure, in order to duplicate the car, you would spend well over double my asking price. If you are interested in the least, feel free to call. I will be glad to answer any questions, and the previous owner and the mechanic who performed the labor would be glad to do so, as well.
